Second Edition Just Released
We are pleased to announce the recent publication of The Psychology of Executive Coaching, Theory and Application, Second Edition, by Bruce Peltier, adjunct professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology. He has taught at the School of Education for many years and was recently honored by USF with a Distinguished Teaching Award (see item below). Dr. Peltier is Professor of Psychology and Ethics at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry as well as a Management Consultant / Executive Coach and private practice psychologist. IME Human Rights Education (HRE) Program Listed in Newly Published Global Compendium
Human Rights Education in the School Systems of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice, is a collection of 101 practices and a valuable resource for teachers and education policymakers. The Department of International and Multicultural Education's Human Rights Education: Concepts & Pedagogies is listed in Chapter IV, number 87, on page 205 of the compendium downloadable using the linked title above.
Information on the development of the compendium can be found on the Human Rights Education Association website. HREA was retained to develop the Compendium under the guidance of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE/ODIHR), the Council of Europe, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have jointly published the compendium. |

MFT Graduate Publishes Journal Article
Fan-Chi Kuo, a 2008 graduate of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program in the Department of Counseling Psychology has recently published the lead article in The American Journal of Family Therapy. The article, Secrets or No Secrets: Confidentiality in Couple Therapy, is based on a paper she wrote for her course Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues. Counseling Psychology faculty member, Dr. Terry Patterson said, "Ms. Kuo has also passed the Professional Counselor exam in Taiwan and is the first graduate of our (MFT) program to accomplish both a major journal publication and licensure within her first post-graduate year." We extend our congratulations to Ms. Kuo! |

Peru: A Collaborative Endeavor
SOE faculty and students took the exciting opportunity to join with Community Connections in an international setting this past May, participating in a service learning experience in Tacna, Peru. Community Connections is a technology-based service-learning program developed by the Computer Science department at USF. Since 2004, Community Connections has worked with teachers, students, and parents in Tacna, Peru to help bridge the digital divide. Read more>> |

Brian Gerrard wins a Jefferson Award for Public Service
CBS television and radio give out a Jefferson Award each week to draw attention to public service. Brian Gerrard, Department of Counseling Psychology, was honored last week in recognition of his work through the Center for Child and Family Development which brings affordable family counseling to the community with "school-based family counseling." Strategies to Support English Language Learners in Our Schools
We are delighted to announce the publication (Scholastic) of Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Pinpoint Student Strengths to Differentiate Instruction and Help Your Striving Readers Succeed, co-authored by Noah Borrero, Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Shawn Bird, former SOE faculty member and now a middle school principal in the Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston, Texas. Susan Katz Awarded Fulbright Fellowship for Spring 2010
We congratulate Susan Katz, Professor in the Department of International and Multicultural Education on being awarded her second Fulbright fellowship. She will be in Ecuador for four months primarily conducting ethnographic research on bilingual intercultural education of the Shuar in the Southern Oriente region in the Amazon. She was invited by the head of education of the Shuar Federation. Dr. Katz will also conduct a series of lectures on bilingual intercultural education, literacy studies and human rights education at the Latin America Academy for the Social Sciences (FLACSO) in Quito. Distinguished Teaching Awards for Two SOE Adjunct Faculty
Congratulations to Bruce Peltier (Counseling Psychology) and Doreen Jones (Catholic Educational Leadership) who are both winners of this year's Distinguished Teaching Award for part-time faculty. They each received a certificate and award of $1,500 at the award dinner in May. We are proud to recognize their long service at USF. and outstanding dedication to their students. |
